'Head Vase' (2023) Sculpture by Christina Graland Joseph
LA-based artist Christina Graland Joseph makes functional figure sculptures that explore the metaphorically rich medium of clay. Her emotive figures have a quiet strength and dignity that subverts the historically racist past of black people represented in ceramic art, as they simultaneously engage with the idea of the body as a vessel.
With her work, Joseph strives to tell a new story created out of revelry that showcases the richness, the beauty, and complexity of black culture.
"Head Vase" measures approx. 6.75" H x 3.75" W x 4" D with a 3.5" diameter opening at the top of the head.
