These Jewel Tumblers by LA-based workshop Sutherlin Santo are an exploration of ceramic glazes which emulate the natural iridescence found in jewel click beetles – beautiful and endangered insects whose carapaces reflect brilliant structural colors. The forms of the porcelain tumblers themselves imitate the distinctive wing cases which are unique to beetles, called elytra.

Sutherlin Santo is a research-driven design workshop based in Los Angeles, California, operated by Garrett and Paul Sutherlin Santo and informed by their diverse backgrounds. Their work seeks to project a future where design’s connection to nature and technology are symmetrical by exploring the relationship of emerging digital processes, ecologically engaged materials, and traditional craft.

The iridescent glaze changes color depending on the ambient light and has a warm brown tone under standard indoor lighting conditions. Please note that each tumbler is unique and some variance should be expected,
