Woven Purse (Black) by Georganne Alex
Chic and refined in all black, this elegant purse is made from woven strips of vintage Japanese silk kimono fabric. Fully lined and lightly padded for a luxurious feel, this 7 x 9 inch purse has a braided, 52-inch shoulder strap. (We find this to be an excellent length for most, but it can be knotted to make it shorter if desired.)
The front panel of the purse features woven strips of fabric, while the back panel is a solid piece of fabric with a very subtle black-on-black woven floral design. (The images shown have been slightly enhanced to show the varying textures of black fabric; the purse reads as solid black but has wonderful subtleties on closer inspection.)
About the maker: Personality, culture, history, and art are woven into the vintage material that Santa Barbara, CA-based designer Georganne Alex has chosen for her line of accessories and clothing. Nowhere is this more apparent than in her use of the Japanese kimono, a primary source for inspiration and design in Georganne’s work.
Known for her flat weaving of kimono fabric, Georganne has been perfecting her craft for four decades. She practices both on-loom and off-loom weaving which makes her work a fusion of techniques as well as fabrications.
A committed environmentalist, she enjoys working with existing materials from previously worn garments because it is an ecologically responsible way to design. A “Georganne Alex” design is infused with a timeless elegance that will tell stories for generations.
