This is a copy of the original matchbooks from The Egg and The Eye, which opened in November of 1965 in the building that now houses Craft Contemporary on Wilshire's Museum Mile.

It was called The Egg and The Eye Restaurant and Gallery. The gallery offered quality crafts, folk and ethnic arts/collections, both from local and international sources. The restaurant menu featured gourmet omelettes, soups, salads, steak poivre in the evening, and had a full bar. A gathering place for creatives, the restaurant and gallery were open until 11 pm, and we've been told that this was where people who worked nearby would come at the end of a long day at work.

And, imagine! This was a time when people could smoke in restaurants and shops, and so the iconic matchbooks were born.
