Kanthas are quilts upcycled from old saris with a running stitch. Kantha refers to both the style of the running stitch, as well as the finished cloth. A centuries-old Indian embroidery tradition that involves stitching together used clothing and other soft fabrics using a running stitch. Commonly used to create quilts and bed coverings, this is a craft practiced by women of rural classes, passed down from mother to daughter. The word "kantha" means "rags" in Sanskrit.
