How can something be simple and complex at the same time? Pioneering fiber artist Kay Sekimachi (b. 1926, San Francisco, California) exemplifies that duality by combining her minimal aesthetic with sophisticated multi-layered weaves and fiber structures. Simple Complexity traces the artist’s groundbreaking work from the 1960s to the present day through pieces drawn from the collection of Forrest L. Merrill. Attracted to the meticulous nature of Sekimachi’s planning and construction, Merrill has amassed a significant collection that spans all stages and series of her career.
