William H. Johnson is primarily known for his folk-art paintings. He’s also recognized for his evolution from realism to expressionism and his work within the Harlem Renaissance. His paintings are characterized by a simple, almost naïve style, with vibrant colors and simplified shapes.
"I have still been able to preserve the primitive in me. . . . My aim is to express in a natural way what I feel, what is in me, both rhythmically and spiritually, all that which in time has been saved up in my family of primitiveness and tradition, and which is now concentrated in me."
-William H., Smithsonian American Art Museum
